Janata Sadat's Palash dyeing and finishing facility has achieved Zero Liquid Discharge status, receiving formal certification from the Bangladesh Department of Environment in November 2023 following a comprehensive two-year effluent treatment infrastructure programme.

The BDT 180 million (approximately USD 1.65 million) upgrade programme encompassed the installation of a multi-stage effluent treatment plant (ETP) incorporating biological oxygen demand reduction, colour removal, and a reverse osmosis polishing stage, coupled with an evaporation pond and salt recovery system. The combined system recycles 94% of process water and eliminates all direct discharge to local waterways — a meaningful environmental outcome for the communities adjacent to the Palash industrial estate.

Environmental Compliance Credentials

  • 01DOE Bangladesh ZLD Certificate — issued November 2023
  • 02Effluent BOD: <10 mg/L (Bangladesh ECR standard: <50 mg/L)
  • 03Effluent COD: <30 mg/L (Bangladesh ECR standard: <200 mg/L)
  • 04Colour removal efficiency: >98% via advanced oxidation process
  • 0594% process water recycled via RO and evaporation recovery
  • 06Meets EU BAT Reference Document for textile effluent (BREF 2023)

“We export to markets that rightly demand their suppliers operate to the highest environmental standards. This certification is not just about compliance — it is about looking the Palash community in the eye and saying that our growth does not come at their expense.”

The ZLD certification satisfies the environmental due diligence requirements of the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D), which becomes applicable to major European importers from 2025. Buyers sourcing dyed or finished jute products from the Palash facility can now reference the DOE certificate and independently verified effluent data in their own supply chain sustainability reports.
